As the holiday season loomed ever nearer, Luke Vandore-Mackay eagerly anticipated the delectable feast he had meticulously planned for Christmas Day. He had devoted countless hours to preparing a 3.5kg joint of gammon, intended to be the pièce de résistance of their festive meal. Little did he realise that his mischievous springer spaniel, Huck, had his own intentions for the succulent ham.
In a comedic twist of fate, Huck managed to pilfer the glazed ham when Luke’s back was turned and proceeded to devour approximately three-quarters of it, leaving behind a shattered plate and one disheartened owner. Luke took to social media to share the calamity that had befallen him, and the tale quickly spread, much to the delight of his followers.
In a post that rapidly went viral, Luke lamented, “You know the 3.5kg gammon I smoked, then cooked overnight in cider, and glazed with a cider, mustard and clove syrup – basting it every 10 minutes until it was burnished rich mahogany? Well, the dog has just eaten ¾ of it. So we’ve got no glazed ham and any minute now the dog is going to puke and make a mess all over the kitchen. He also broke the stupid expensive plate it was on. Christmas is cancelled. Silly dog.”
Although Luke’s Christmas plans had gone awry, he couldn’t help but chuckle at the absurdity of the situation, all the while keeping a watchful eye on Huck, who was grappling with the consequences of his indulgence. As a chef, Luke was genuinely worried about the well-being of his furry companion and even spent the night in the kitchen alongside Huck to ensure that he was okay.
“I am sleeping in the kitchen with the silly dog in case he suffers ill effects from eating too much ham because I love that thieving rascal. The dog spent the night farting on me and needing urgent toilet breaks in the rain but seems essentially fine and not affected by his ham feast,” he shared on social media.
Despite the dog’s gastronomic misadventure, Huck thankfully made a full recovery and was soon back to his playful self. The next day, he went on a rejuvenating walk through the forest, putting the Christmas calamity behind him.
In the end, while Luke’s Christmas may have been lacking the glazed ham he had meticulously prepared, the hilarious escapade of Huck’s feast became a tale that would be recounted with laughter for years to come. As for Christmas dinner, a new culinary adventure awaited Luke, as he embraced the festive spirit with resilience and good humour.
