Once upon a time, a dear friend introduced me to a humble plastic pouch brimming with sun-drenched, dried apricots all the way from California. Initially, I was hesitant to indulge in these preserved fruits as the thought of dried apricots failed to ignite my taste buds. However, with just one succulent bite, I was whisked away to a world of pure delight, and it became apparent why my friend held these dried apricots in such high esteem. This was no ordinary dried fruit – this was the famed Blenheim apricot, and it was nothing short of extraordinary.
The Blenheim apricot is renowned for its rich, burnt-orange hue, its heady floral fragrance, and a wonderfully complex blend of sweet and tangy flavours that dance upon the palate. Unlike its more commonplace counterparts, the Blenheim variety is flatter, tender to the touch, and when dried, takes on a texture reminiscent of luxurious fruit leather. For the longest time, these magnificent apricots were a rare find, only accessible at farmers’ markets in California or through specialised stores offering mail order services.
Then one fateful day, I stumbled upon these glorious dried Blenheim apricots at Trader Joe’s. Packaged in a simple, unassuming clear plastic bag labelled “Extra Choice California Apricots” and priced at just $4.99, this discovery was a complete game-changer. While the packaging did not explicitly declare them to be Blenheim apricots, their unmistakable, intense flavours, their melt-in-your-mouth texture, and their luscious orange hue were undeniable giveaways. It goes without saying, I never leave Trader Joe’s without stocking up on several bags of these exceptional treats.
I incorporate these dried apricots into a myriad of culinary creations – whether enjoyed straight from the bag as a rapid energy fix, mixed into wholesome granola, or even baked into temptingly sweet cookies and breads. As a keen homebrewer, I have also dared to experiment with infusing batches of hefeweizen, cider, and kombucha with their delightful essence. The potential for culinary creativity with these apricots knows no bounds, and their delectable taste is a perpetual source of joy.
While I can’t claim to have relocated to California solely for these apricots, they have unequivocally become one of the numerous pleasures of living in this golden state. And even if the time comes for me to bid farewell to this sun-kissed land, I take comfort in knowing that I can forever carry a piece of California with me, courtesy of these delightful, chewy, sweet-tart apricots.
