Exploring Exciting New Trails in Berlin, Alabama

The Berlin Town Council is abuzz with anticipation after receiving news of an innovative project set to link Berlin to a vast network of recreational trails stretching across the state of Alabama. The project, known as “Sweet Trails Alabama,” has ambitious goals including promoting health and wellness, boosting tourism, driving economic growth, and preserving natural resources.

During a recent meeting, planners presented the exciting prospect of linking Gadsden and Cullman with a trail passing through Berlin, as well as another trail connecting Berlin to Alabama Highway 69 via County Road 747 on its path to Guntersville. The council is eagerly seeking more details about the project, particularly as they contemplate creating walking trails around the planned town park at the Berlin Farmers Market.

To add to the excitement, Mayor Patrick Bates is in discussions with Rep. Randall Shedd, R-Fairview, to investigate the potential of securing Community Block Development Grants through the North Alabama Regional Council of Governments. This could help cover the cost of resurfacing County Roads 1612 and 1614, potentially exceeding the original estimated cost. Concerns were raised about the long-term durability of the resurfaced roads, as the initial estimate of $90,000 for the project only included a 4-inch deep base. Furthermore, the Cullman County Water Department has proposed replacing water mains alongside the roads as part of the reconstruction. The Berlin Volunteer Fire Department has also requested the installation of a 6-inch main in the area to place a fire hydrant near residences there.

But wait, there’s more! The pad for the community storm shelter has been completed, and installation of the shelter itself could commence in 30 days, allowing for the curing of the pad. If all goes according to plan, the shelter should be in place before the commencement of the 2024 storm season.

It’s worth noting that the Berlin Town Hall will be closed from Dec. 22, 2023, through Jan. 2, 2024, so residents should plan their visits accordingly. On the subject of visits, the Berlin Town Council convenes at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month, and the public is warmly invited to attend.

Exciting things are most certainly in the pipeline for Berlin, Alabama, and residents can anticipate a bright future filled with new trails, improved infrastructure, and enhanced safety measures. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the success of the “Sweet Trails Alabama” project and the many other developments awaiting this delightful town!
