The official overseeing the reconstruction project for the public establishment has confirmed that the scaffolding surrounding the spire will be removed before the start of the competition. The spire reappeared during Christmas with its cross and rooster in the Paris sky, still enclosed by scaffolding, indicating that progress on healing one of the significant damage caused by the fire has been made. Philippe Jost reiterated this point during an interview on Radio Classique.
The dismantling of the scaffolding is scheduled to begin in the spring and will be well-advanced by the time of the Olympics (July 26-August 11) to ensure clear visibility of the spire in the Paris sky when the city is expected to experience a high volume of visitors. This process will enable the closure of the vault of the transept crossing and clear the interior space of the cathedral at the specific location where a new step supporting the altar will be constructed.
The reopening of the cathedral is set for December 8, 2024, and despite the ongoing reconstruction efforts during the Olympics and subsequent Paralympic Games, public access to the three entrances of the cathedral and the main surrounding street will be coordinated with the Prefecture of Police, according to Philippe Jost.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are still in progress, with the accidental track being favored at the conclusion of the preliminary investigation.
