With 16 million visitors and over 10,000 international athletes expected in Paris for the Summer Olympics from July 26 to August 11, Paris Airports (ADP) is facing the enormous challenge of managing unprecedented and sensitive passenger flows.
One of the biggest concerns is the transportation system, particularly the functionality of the RER B line that connects Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport to the capital. The chronic issues with this line have prompted plans to improve the frequency of trains by introducing new railway cars.
Arrival controls at the airport also pose a significant challenge, with unpredictable delays and frequent malfunctions in the automated border crossing system (Parafe). To mitigate these issues, ADP plans to introduce new signage and Parafe gates to streamline passenger flow, as well as a software update to prevent system blockages based on nationalities.
A shortage of border police officers has led to congestion at the airport, prompting efforts to recruit additional officers and deploy more security agents.
Special considerations must also be made for the handling of baggage, especially for athletes traveling with oversized equipment such as pole vaults. To address this, ADP plans to create a dedicated check-in area and delivery zone for Olympic athletes, as well as an exclusive boarding terminal to separate their flow from regular passengers.
To keep passengers informed and in control of their travel, a new smartphone application will be launched to provide real-time information on flight delays, security wait times, and transportation options.
While these measures cannot guarantee a risk-free experience, ADP remains confident in their ability to manage the surge in visitors and athletes. The ultimate goal is to ensure a successful event, setting the stage for future improvements in security, baggage handling, and overall hospitality.
As Paris prepares to welcome the world for the Olympics, efforts are underway to ensure a smooth and efficient experience for all those who will be passing through its airports.
