The Tastiest News in Connecticut: Food Innovators Win Over Judges and Audience with Delectable Eats

Connecticut’s culinary and beverage scene recently experienced an exciting shakeup as a group of visionary entrepreneurs competed for supremacy in a food accelerator program. The stirring event, hosted by Hartford-based organization reSET, which champions businesses with a social mission, saw a total of £18,800 in grant funds awarded to the participants.

The competition was intense and the stakes were high as eight food entrepreneurs showcased their businesses and delectable product samples to a panel of four judges and an enthusiastic audience at Foodie Demo Day. Each competitor brought something distinct to the table, catering to niche markets such as vegan and gluten-free enthusiasts, as well as those seeking unique catering experiences and even pets with a discerning palate.

Ultimately, the champions emerged victorious, sharing a prize pool of £2,800. In addition, each entrepreneur completing reSET’s Food Accelerator program also received a £2,000 business growth grant. However, the real winners were the fortunate consumers who will have the pleasure of indulging in the innovative and delicious products that arose from the competition.

The top award was bestowed upon Becky Tkacs, the creative force behind Charlie’s Traveling Treat Truck, a mobile dog bakery that offers delightful treats made with all-natural ingredients and supports rescue organizations. The second prize went to Kleon Clarke, the founder of Nyam Bakery, a local Jamaican bakery that captivates patrons with their cocobread rolls, loaves, and Caribbean-inspired sweets. Nicola Poplin, the mastermind behind Pop’s Famous Guac, secured the third prize with her preservative-free, whole-ingredient guacamole that’s as nourishing for the soul as it is tantalising for the taste buds.

The audience also had their say, bestowing Deirdre Brickhouse, chief baker and owner of SweetHouse Creations, with the coveted Audience Choice Award. The Hartford-based bakery is renowned for its elegant treats, all of which are vegan and/or gluten-free, catering to the ever-growing market of health-conscious foodies.

The judging panel faced a delightful challenge, with a diverse range of flavours and experiences at play. Alisa Bowens-Mercado, the founder, CEO, and brewmaster of Rhythm Brewing Co., was joined by Craig Wright, owner/operator of Craig’s Kitchen, Gina Luari, a well-established restaurateur, and Justin Morales, a seasoned hospitality professional.

The event was a feast for the senses, as the entrepreneurs showcased their culinary creativity and shared their vision for making a difference in the food industry. Sarah Bodley, reSET’s executive director, noted that consumers are increasingly looking to support businesses that have a social mission, making the event not just a competition, but a celebration of food with a purpose.
