In an enchanting show of generosity, three thoughtful souls from Vankleek Hill set out on a mission to bring much-needed supplies to a First Nation community in northern Québec. Melanie Villeneuve, Samme Putzel, and Susie Fairbrother embarked on a heartfelt journey to Lac Rapide on Reservoir Cabonga, carrying essential food items for the residents of the Algonquins of Lac Barrière.
This heartwarming initiative was made possible by the proceeds from the sale of Indigenous art at a local market. The captivating art, crafted by Villeneuve, also known as Snow Bear, alongside other talented Indigenous artists, was proudly displayed at Snow Bear’s Corner: Kindness Market in various community events and artisan fairs across the region. The success of the market enabled the group to raise funds to purchase and prepare the much-needed supplies for the community of Lac Rapide.
The supplies consisted of 50 containers of robust beef barley soup, 60 pieces of traditional bannock bread, 50 juicy oranges, and 48 bottles of refreshing water. The gesture aimed to provide nourishment and spread joy to the residents of Lac Rapide, particularly during the holiday season, ensuring that they could savor delicious food despite the challenging economic circumstances.
Villeneuve, in collaboration with Putzel and Fairbrother, not only aimed to support the community of Lac Rapide but also to showcase the work of other Indigenous artists and help boost their income. The market provided a platform for artists like Dave Charette of Wikwemikong on Manitoulin Island, Chelsea Brosseau of Akwesasne, Charlene Tolley of Kitigan Zibi near Maniwaki, and Tion Twog-Ki who is Mohawk/Métis to showcase their talent and generate income during difficult times.
The compassionate actions of the Vankleek Hill residents serve as a poignant reminder of the strength of community and the impact of joining forces to support one another. Through their efforts, they not only delivered essential supplies to the residents of Lac Rapide but also uplifted the spirits of the entire community.
The heartwarming tale of kindness and generosity displayed by these individuals shines a light on the significance of compassion and the remarkable impact that small acts of goodwill can have on communities in need. As we navigate through challenging times, it is both heartening and inspiring to witness people coming together to support and uplift one another, proving that a little kindness can truly work wonders.
