The latest report from the Office for National Statistics reveals that the cost of food is rising at a slower pace compared to previous times. This means that families won’t have to stretch their budgets as far as they did last year, with food prices only 9.2% higher than they were twelve months ago.
However, despite this hopeful news, many families are still finding it tough to make ends meet, as pointed out by the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt. High prices continue to pose challenges, but the government is working to implement measures to alleviate the burden.

Asda Supermarket, for instance, offers children a hot or cold meal for just £1, without the need for an accompanying adult purchase. They are also providing a ‘winter warmer’ deal for seniors, offering soup, a roll, and unlimited tea and coffee for only £1.
Meanwhile, Bella Italia provides kids with a three-course meal for just £1 from Monday to Thursday when an adult purchases a meal. IKEA offers kids’ meals starting from a mere 95p, making it an incredibly affordable option for families. Preto, a Brazilian steakhouse chain, offers children up to ten years old a free meal on weekdays from 4pm onwards with the purchase of an adult meal.
Sainsburys offers a hot meal or lunch bag for children at just £1 when an adult main meal is purchased. Dobbies Garden Centres grants kids a free meal daily with the purchase of an adult main meal. The Real Greek has also joined in the festive spirit, allowing kids to eat for free from December 22nd to January 7th when adults spend £10. Even budget hotel chains Travelodge and Premier Inn are providing free breakfast for children with an adult purchase.
Adding to the positive outlook, the rate of inflation is gradually decreasing. In November, inflation dropped to 3.9%, signifying a slower increase in prices for goods and services. Core inflation has also decreased significantly, offering a sense of relief for families.
