Les Sealey, a once little-known figure in the history of Manchester United, has finally regained attention due to the discovery of his lost tapes nearly 30 years after they were recorded. The former goalkeeper played a crucial role in some of the club’s most significant moments, including their FA Cup win in 1990 and their European Cup Winners’ Cup victory in 1991.
Sealey’s ascension to a revered figure began when, on loan from Luton, he stepped in for Scotland international Jim Leighton in goal for the 1-0 FA Cup final replay win over Crystal Palace, marking Sir Alex Ferguson’s first trophy at the club. Subsequently, Sealey became a regular first-team player, but it was the League Cup final against Sheffield Wednesday that truly tested his strength. Despite suffering a severe injury with 12 minutes remaining, resulting in his knee being “sliced right through to the bone,” Sealey demonstrated incredible courage by playing through the pain until the end of the match.
Nevertheless, it was the European Cup Winners’ Cup final against Barcelona that solidified Sealey’s legendary status. Despite a surgeon advising him that he had “absolutely no chance” of playing due to his severe injury, Sealey defied the odds and took to the pitch, contributing to United’s 2-1 victory. This marked a triumphant return for Sealey, who, in the face of adversity, displayed unparalleled strength and determination.
