Australian computer scientist, Craig Wright, has been found guilty of perjury and forgery in an attempt to falsely assert his identity as the creator of Bitcoin. Following a thorough six-week investigation, a judge at London’s High Court has unequivocally ruled that Wright is not, in fact, the elusive cryptocurrency creator known as Satoshi Nakamoto.
Wright has persistently maintained that he is the individual behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, who authored Bitcoin’s seminal 2008 white paper. However, the presiding judge, James Mellor, has declared that Wright “systematically and dishonestly” lied to the court and that “the evidence against Dr. Wright is unequivocal” in proving his false claims.
The lawsuit was initiated by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a non-profit organization aimed at refuting Wright’s assertion of being Satoshi Nakamoto. The judge’s ruling affirms that Wright did not create Bitcoin, adopt the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, or contribute to the development of the Bitcoin system or its initial software versions.
Judge Mellor underscored the extensive evidence against Wright, which led to irrefutable conclusions. The forged evidence presented by Wright was deemed “clumsy” and unreliable, leading the judge to definitively reject any support for Wright’s claims.
Revelations from reports published by Gizmodo and Wired in 2015 indicated that some of the evidence linking Wright to the creation of Bitcoin was fabricated by Wright himself. Despite Wright’s persistent efforts to prove his identity through testimonies, challenges to developers, and defamation lawsuits against his accusers, the court’s ruling overwhelmingly favored COPA.
The matter of injunctive relief is set to be addressed in a subsequent hearing, while Wright has expressed his intent to appeal the ruling on the issue of his identity.
