The Cochrane Activettes have had an eventful and whirlwind year, marked by a surge in demand for their services and the celebration of their 45th anniversary. From a humble beginning of 46 members in 1978, the group has now blossomed to include 100 community volunteers. Their most notable undertaking in 2023 was the installation of 11 automated external defibrillator (AED) units around town, with plans for four more in 2024.
Amidst the festivities, the Activettes also engaged with the community through smaller events, distributing cupcakes, frisbees, and buttons at various gatherings. However, the need at the food bank saw a staggering 55% increase in demand compared to the previous year. President Sue Lunnin emphasized the group’s commitment to meeting this challenge and continuing to support the community, including providing assistance to 18 local schools in Cochrane and the surrounding area.
To meet the growing need, the group expanded their food bank by adding a new mezzanine in one of their bays. This extra space will enable them to continue serving the increasing number of individuals and families who rely on their services. The annual Share Your Christmas Program also distributed a record number of hampers, providing support to 404 families during the holiday season.
Despite their tremendous efforts, the Cochrane Activettes stress that their work is far from over. In 2024, they are determined to continue addressing the increased demand at the food bank, while also collaborating with other local organizations such as The Helping Hands Society of Cochrane and Area and Cochrane and Area Events Society. Their dedication to supporting the community is unwavering, and they remain committed to making a positive impact in the lives of those they serve.
In addition to the food bank, the Cochrane Activettes also operate the Cochrane Clothesline, a second-hand store that offers affordable clothing, jewelry, purses, and linens. The store, which relies on donations from the community, contributes its proceeds to the food bank and other community initiatives.
For those who wish to support the Cochrane Activettes, there are various opportunities to volunteer and donate. Whether it’s through contributing gently used items to the Clothesline or dedicating time to assist with their programs, individuals can play a part in helping the group continue its valuable work in the community.
