Ski Resorts Struggle to Add New Trails Due to Lack of Snow

The ski resorts of Summit County have had a challenging week as the absence of snow has hindered their efforts to unveil new trails and terrain. Some runs have even had to shut down due to the lack of snow, causing disappointment for skiers and riders eagerly anticipating a day on the slopes.

However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon as snowfall has returned, with more in the forecast for the weekend. Keystone Resort seems to be weathering the storm the best, having recently expanded their lift-accessible terrain with the launch of the Bergman Express lift. This expansion has opened up hundreds of acres for visitors to explore, and further expansion is expected this week.

Breckenridge Ski Resort is preparing to open its American Trail terrain park on Peak 9 this Saturday, offering thrill-seekers medium-sized features and jumps. Work on Peak 6 is also ongoing, with more terrain plans in the works.
At Copper Mountain Resort, the Woodward Mountain Park zone is set to open, and even snowboarder Red Gerard is planning to meet with guests. Another terrain park, Pipe Dreams, is also scheduled to open on Saturday.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area is eyeing the opening of The Beavers, a vast area of intermediate to advanced terrain. However, with little snowfall expected, there is no definite timeline for its opening. Limited openings have been happening throughout the week, with some terrain closures based on safety and conditions.

Loveland Ski Area has opened a new blue run, Fire Cut, accessible by the Ptarmigan lift, but there are no concrete plans for additional terrain openings at the moment.

Despite the setbacks, ski resorts are working hard to keep visitors entertained and safe while they await more snow. There are still plenty of events and activities to look forward to in the weeks ahead. As winter continues, let’s hope for more snow and new terrain openings to make the most of the ski season in Summit County.
