More than 30 items of gold and silver from the V&A and British Museum to be returned to Ghana on long-term loan agreement
– 17 items from V&A and 15 items from British Museum to be loaned to Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi in separate three-year agreements
– Collections to form part of an exhibition celebrating the 2024 Silver Jubilee of His Royal Majesty, the Asantehene, Osei Tutu II
– Items have been away from Ghana for 150 years
– Items of court regalia described as the equivalent of “our Crown Jewels” by Tristram Hunt, director of the V&A
– Many items were looted from Kumasi during the Anglo-Asante wars of the 19th century
