The Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom has released some fascinating news about Moscow’s security efforts. According to a recent update from Defence Intelligence, the Kremlin has been taking steps to bolster its protection, particularly with the establishment of the MGSF in November 2022.
This new organization, aiming to gather 15,000 recruits, has already drawn in thousands of individuals. As of July 2023, the MGSF has taken on a more paramilitary role, even being granted the authority to wield firearms. UK intelligence sees the MGSF as part of Russia’s historical trend of nurturing armed groups separate from the main military force.
Reports indicate that the strengthening of the MGSF was partly a response to concerns over Moscow’s local security forces, particularly after the clash with Wagner Group troops in June 2023. The UK intelligence agency noted that the MGSF also provides Muscovites with a way to contribute to “patriotic” wartime efforts without having to serve on the front line in Ukraine.
Analysts also pointed out the success of Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin in shielding the capital’s affluent population from the direct impact of the conflict. It was observed that most Russian casualties in Ukraine have come from less prosperous, rural areas.
