Embracing the Big Moment: Canmore Tech Skier Set to Compete at 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games

17-year-old technical alpine skier Sierra Coe of Canmore is preparing for the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea. Coe, who has been skiing since she was two, will compete in events including slalom, giant slalom, super-G, and alpine combined from Jan. 21-26 at the Jeongseon ski resort.

Having achieved strong results on last year’s NorAm Cup and FIS circuits, Coe has earned a spot at the prestigious event in South Korea. She is a member of the Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont, USA, known for producing top-tier alpine skiing athletes.

Coe is dedicated to skiing and is also an active member of CrossFit Canmore. She has found mentorship and inspiration from World Cup gold medallist Kris Mahler, a ski cross racer, and owner of CrossFit Canmore, Carson Sander.

Despite the significance of her selection for the Youth Olympic Games, Coe remains focused and determined, with a mindset to navigate the pressure and enjoy the experience. According to Jenni Stielow, alpine excel program and pathway manager at Alpine Canada, the selected athletes for the Youth Olympic Games exhibit remarkable spirit, brimming with youthful energy and limitless potential.

Gangwon 2024 will also see Canmore alpine skier Thomas Cais as a non-travelling alternate and Leanne Gartner, from Bow Valley, qualified for the event in cross-country skiing. The anticipation is high as Coe and her fellow athletes prepare to represent Canada on the international stage, showcasing their dedication, talent, and sporting prowess.
