“Neighbours at Odds: Russia Shuts Down Border Crossing for Overhaul”

Estonia has just revealed some interesting news about Russia’s plans to shut down a major border checkpoint for a whopping two years. The reason? Well, they claim it’s all due to some renovation works. But doesn’t something feel a bit off about this?

The Estonian Foreign Ministry has been informed that the Narva-Ivangorod crossing will cease road traffic from February 1st. And get this – Russia’s renovations are supposedly set to continue until the end of 2025. That’s quite a lengthy construction project!

Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna isn’t entirely convinced, though. “We’ll see what really happens,” he told reporters. It’s as if he suspects that the renovations won’t take as long as Russia claims. Meanwhile, Estonia has made it clear that they will continue with their regular border operations.

But don’t despair just yet. While vehicles won’t be able to cross at the Narva-Ivangorod checkpoint, it seems that pedestrians will still have access. What a relief!

Let’s zoom out and look at the bigger picture. Estonia and Russia share a massive 333-kilometer-long border. And when the Narva checkpoint closes, there will still be five other crossings open. So, it’s not a complete shutout between these neighbouring countries.

And here’s where it gets interesting. Estonia, a former Soviet state, is openly supporting Ukraine in its struggles against Moscow. Tensions between Estonia and Russia have been running high. So, it’s no surprise that the border closure news has everyone talking.

This isn’t the first time Estonia has raised concerns about travel to Russia. Just a few months back, they actually advised their citizens to avoid travelling there. They were all about “better safe than sorry” due to concerns about an influx of migrants at the border.

But who knows what’s really going on? Maybe Russia is just taking a breather for a little sprucing up. Or perhaps there’s more to this story than meets the eye. Only time will tell!
