Who would have thought that a combination of high-pressure water, compressed air, and freezing temperatures could create the perfect recipe for snow? It’s a magical process unfolding at Winter Park near Kewaunee, where they’re harnessing this ingenious system to make up for lost time.
The early morning Thursday temperatures in the 20s provided the ideal conditions for Kewaunee County Promotions and Recreation Director, Dave Myers, to kickstart the four snow guns, which are now working tirelessly. “We kicked off last night, and our goal is to keep making snow through Friday morning. But then it warms up again. So we’ll closely monitor the temperatures and make snow whenever we get the chance,” shared Myers enthusiastically.
The top priority now is getting the five-lane tubing run prepped and ready. “Usually we’ll create some large mounds, let them dry out a bit, but there’ll be residual water in there that will seep out. Our groomers will then move it, but one issue we’re facing is waiting for the ground to freeze up more. Our groomers risk tearing up the soft ground right now,” he elaborated.
It hasn’t been a smooth ride though. “The weather’s been quite challenging. Typically, we’d have more snow by now,” said Hailey Piepho, Winter Park Curator. Winter Park isn’t just about tubing; it also boasts downhill skiing and snowboarding. Last season, the site saw around 14,000 visitors. “It’s a blast. It’s somewhat of a hidden gem, so not many people know about it. But once they discover it, they’re amazed at how lovely it is,” shared Piepho.
The snow-making mission will persist as long as the weather cooperates. “We won’t be ready to open this weekend. However, I’m hoping for the following weekend. We’ll keep everyone updated, because we can’t predict what Mother Nature has in store for us next week. Whether it brings snow or rain, we’re crossing our fingers for snow,” Myers added optimistically.
Once the winter season kicks off, Winter Park will open to the public on weekends, with hopes to keep the fun going until the third week of March, just like last year. It’s all about embracing the chilly season and relishing the great outdoors. Whether it’s zipping down the tubing run or carving up the slopes, Winter Park is gearing up for a winter wonderland. So, dust off your snow gear because the excitement is on its way!
