The Severn Valley Railway struck gold with its Winter Diesel Day event, drawing in a surprisingly large crowd on Friday, December 29. Instead of the expected modest turnout, the event pulled in over 1,000 paying passengers, along with a substantial number of shareholders. The revenue from ticket sales alone soared to an impressive £30,000, a whopping 35 per cent higher than the railway had originally hoped for.
Managing director Jonathan ‘Gus’ Dunster was over the moon about the success, exclaiming, “The SVR has absolutely nailed it once again.” The decision to test out a brief, diesel-enthusiast event in the winter season turned out to be a brilliant gamble. With a flawless timetable and a united team spirit across the railway, Dunster expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the railway’s commitment to enthusiast events as the right choice.
The event showcased the highly anticipated return to service of the SVR-based Diesel Multiple Unit, as well as the provision of steam heat by Class 40 40106, Class 46 D182, and pannier tank 7714 double-heading with a diesel locomotive. This nod to the late 1960s and 1970s, when diesel steam heating was the norm, was well-received by visitors, with many expressing their appreciation for the nostalgic atmosphere as the light faded. Gus himself rode the last train of the day into Kidderminster at 21.45, describing it as a true pleasure.
The SVR is now gearing up for a steam enthusiast event over the upcoming weekend, scheduled for January 6 and 7. The railway anticipates a high turnout, as strong advance ticket sales have indicated.
Following the success of the Winter Diesel Day, the SVR is already looking ahead to its next enthusiast-focused event. Visitor engagement manager Lewis Maddox revealed plans for a mixed traction and real ale festival in June, confident that the combination will be a hit.
