Teenager Sentenced for Anti-Semitic Chants in the Subway

A 16-year-old minor was found guilty of public insult based on religion but acquitted of condoning crimes against humanity by the children’s court in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine) for participating in anti-Semitic chants in the Parisian subway in late October. The court upheld the provisional judicial educational measure, which included an insertion module and a reparation module, implemented after the incident. The case will proceed to the sentencing hearing on June 20.

Me Morad Falek, the minor’s lawyer, emphasized the positive impact of the workshops organized by the Judicial Protection of Youth (PJJ) as part of the provisional educational measure. Due to their place of residence, several other adolescents from this group are expected to be judged soon in Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis).

On October 31, a group of individuals was recorded singing or making anti-Semitic remarks on line 3 of the Parisian subway. The video, in which the group was seen singing “screw the Jews and screw your mother, long live Palestine yeah yeah, screw the Jews and grandmothers, we are Nazis and proud,” was reported to the public prosecutor’s office by the police prefecture, the RATP, and the International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism (Licra).

Nearly two weeks after the video was taken, eight underage individuals involved in the incident were arrested. Gérald Darmanin, the Minister of the Interior, confirmed the identification of those responsible for the anti-Semitic chants in the Parisian subway.
