In a recent chinwag with the press, Howe admitted, “We’ve had a couple of proper rough games against Liverpool, for sure – the game last season at Anfield was a right toughie for us. This season wasn’t any easier. I think the silver lining in both of those games is we really gave Liverpool a run for their money.”
Highlighting Liverpool’s clout, Howe acknowledged the need for his team to be mentally strong and to find their groove to secure a positive result. He also stressed the importance of tactical prep, as Liverpool’s intense style will require the Magpies to be on the ball.
However, Newcastle is facing a potential pickle as they could be without as many as nine players for the upcoming match. A string of injuries has benched key players like Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, Jamaal Lascelles, Joe Willock, Elliot Anderson, Javier Manquillo, and Matt Targett. On top of that, Sandro Tonali is banned from playing due to a bit of a boo-boo with betting rules.
Giving an update on the injured players, Howe said, “Willock and Barnes continue to work behind the scenes back from their respective injuries, but no immediate update on them. Jamaal we don’t think it’s serious and we hope he’ll be back fairly soon.”
Despite the challenging circumstances, Howe remains optimistic and determined to rally his troops for the upcoming match. While the odds may be against them, the Magpies will need to dig deep and put on a cracking performance to overcome the formidable Liverpool side.
