The Growing Frustration of Police Unions Behind Maximum Security for Paris 2024 Olympics

On December 21, 2023, a meeting took place between the secretary general of the police administration (SGAP) of the prefecture of Police and several police unions in the Paris region to discuss the security planning for the 2024 Olympic Games. With an expected 16 million people in the Paris region between July 26 and August 11, 2024, the meeting focused on the need to mobilize law enforcement and provide social guarantees.

Discussions revolved around the creation of a dedicated headquarters for security management at the event and the number of police officers needed from the Paris region. Last year, the Minister of the Interior had announced the mobilization of 30,000 police officers and gendarmes daily.

However, the union organizations stressed the need for worthwhile social compensation for the massive police force. Negotiations included topics such as holidays, social measures like childcare for mobilized police officers, and a specific bonus for the Olympic Games. The union forces were not satisfied with the proposed 1,500 euro bonus and demanded “concrete answers” to their concerns.

The Unité SGP FO union delegate emphasized the need for significant improvements to ensure the well-being and effectiveness of police officers at the event, while the Alliance Police Nationale and Unsa police unions warned of a potential “black day” on January 18, 2024, if their questions were not answered.

Despite the efforts to address their concerns, the prefecture of Police did not provide a response to the union’s requests for comment. Requests for further dialogues between the prefecture and the unions were also made.
