As New Year’s Eve approaches, France is preparing to implement an extensive security operation, deploying 90,000 police officers and gendarmes nationwide, with 6,000 stationed in Paris. This decision follows a request from French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, who detailed the security measures from the Paris police headquarters on December 29.

Darmanin emphasized the “extremely high terrorist threat” facing the country, citing the ongoing conflict in Israel and Palestine as a major contributing factor. He stressed the importance of firm security measures to address France’s history as a target for terrorist activities and to provide reassurance to citizens during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The planned security measures include the deployment of helicopters and 73 mobile units, including the newly formed CRS8 units, specialized in addressing urban violence. In addition to the 90,000 police officers and gendarmes, 5,000 soldiers from Operation Sentinel and tens of thousands of firefighters will also be mobilized to ensure public safety.

Several local authorities have also implemented specific measures to regulate New Year’s Eve celebrations, such as bans on public alcohol consumption, fuel sales, and firework displays, aiming to maintain public order and ensure citizen safety during the festive period.
