A Culinary Chronicle: NYC Food Scene Stories from Midyear to Year-end 2023 – NYC Food Policy Center (Hunter College)

Step into the latter half of 2023 and journey with us as we unveil food policies and illuminate the visionaries of the food scene. Our primary focus has been on child nutrition, exploring topics such as nutrition education in schools, marketing to children, nutrition programs for families, and providing free school meals to all students. We’ve also delved into pressing issues like climate change, sustainability, food access, and the global problem of food waste. Throughout this time, we’ve showcased incredible individuals and initiatives that have united communities through the joy of food, all while celebrating the themes of equality and diversity in food systems. Join us as we reminisce about our featured pieces from July to December 2023.

In July, we kicked off with an in-depth look at the vital work of the Purple Apron Food Pantry. We also had the privilege of hosting the CUNY Chancellor and the CEO of Food Bank for NYC on a memorable tour, filled with eye-opening experiences and an incredible sense of the impactful work being done to combat food insecurity.

As the summer transitioned into August, we turned our attention to the CookShop program and the pivotal role it plays in educating young children and their families about nutrition. The program’s positive impact was truly inspiring, bringing about heartwarming changes in countless lives.

September saw us sitting down with the remarkable Susana Camarena, Senior Director of Impact and Culture, and Head of the Tacombi Foundation. Her passion for making a difference in the food world is truly infectious, leaving us motivated and optimistic about the changes on the horizon.

Entering October, we were privileged to have a profound conversation with Natasha Pernicka, of The Alliance for a Hunger Free New York and The Food Pantries for the Capital District. Her dedication to eradicating hunger and food insecurity is nothing short of inspiring, embodying the real impact that passionate individuals can have on the world.

As December marked the end of the year, we wrapped things up with a captivating interview focusing on the important work being done by The Alliance for a Hunger-Free New York and The Food Pantries for the Capital District.

Over the past six months, we’ve been given a glimpse into the extraordinary efforts to revolutionize the food world, one meal at a time.
