Suspected Arson at MP Mike Freer’s Office Sparks Police Investigation

The Metropolitan Police is currently investigating a suspected arson attack at the constituency office of Mike Freer, a Conservative MP. The incident occurred on Christmas Eve at his office in north London. Thankfully, no one was injured, as the MP was not present at the time.

Freer expressed his gratitude to the police for their swift response to the fire, and he also expressed his relief that he was not in his office at the time of the incident. He noted that he has faced several troubling events recently, including a visit to his office by the individual who later murdered MP David Amess.

The Metropolitan Police has stated that the cause of the fire is under investigation, as they suspect it may have been deliberately started. Freer revealed that he has had to take additional precautions, such as wearing a stab vest and carrying panic alarms, following the tragic murder of fellow MP David Amess in 2021.

The individual responsible for the murder of MP Amess had also visited Freer’s constituency office and conducted research on other prominent politicians, including Tory ministers and the Labour leader. The police informed Freer that the suspect had surveilled his office for over an hour on a previous occasion, further raising concerns about his safety.

The recent arson attack has raised concerns about the safety of MPs, particularly those who have voiced opinions on sensitive topics such as the Israel-Gaza conflict. Offices of certain Labour MPs have been targeted by Pro-Palestine protesters, leading to heightened anxieties about their security.

In the aftermath of the tragic murder of MP Jo Cox in 2016, MPs were in the process of receiving enhanced security measures for their homes and constituency offices. Given recent events, MPs are once again considering additional security measures to ensure their safety.

The suspected arson attack at Mike Freer’s constituency office serves as a reminder of the potential risks faced by public figures, especially when it comes to expressing opinions on contentious issues. As the investigation continues, it is imperative to address the safety concerns of MPs and implement appropriate security measures to protect them and their staff.
