The esteemed Old Bailey, one of London’s most iconic courthouses, has recently unveiled its inaugural merchandise for sale, featuring exquisite silk scarves designed to embody the opulence of the renowned institution. Available in two elegant colours, these luxurious scarves are not only a fashionable accessory but also a meaningful contribution to the Sheriffs’ and Recorder’s Fund, a charitable organisation dedicated to aiding the reintegration of former convicts into society.
The creation of the Old Bailey silk scarves was spearheaded by Judge Mark Lucraft KC, the Recorder of London, who enlisted the artistic prowess of his son, Matthew. Inspired by a scarf Matthew had crafted as a gift for Judge Lucraft’s wife, the idea to extend the design to commemorate the Old Bailey and utilise the proceeds for charitable purposes was conceived. According to Judge Lucraft, the vision for the scarf was to encapsulate the distinctive essence of the courthouse, allowing it to be immediately recognisable to all who behold it.
The design, meticulously conceptualised by Matthew Lucraft, showcases myriad elements of the Old Bailey, including the imposing Grand Hall, the iconic figure of justice atop the dome, Court One, Dead Man’s Walk, and the historic as well as modern entrances to the building. Judge Lucraft expressed his admiration for the scarf, lauding its ability to evoke the grandeur and prestige of the courthouse.
Matthew Lucraft, a talented architectural designer based in London, shared insights into the creative process behind the Old Bailey scarf, revealing that his father had envisioned the project, with no specific parameters in mind. Through a series of intricate sketches on A3 paper, Matthew meticulously translated the architectural marvels of the Old Bailey onto a square scarf, a medium he was previously unaccustomed to working with. After extensive research, he identified a silk printing company to bring his vision to life, resulting in an exquisitely crafted final product.
These limited-edition silk scarves are not only a sartorial statement but a symbol of support for the noble cause championed by the Sheriffs’ and Recorder’s Fund.
