As Chelsea reaches the midway point of the 2023/24 Premier League season, the team’s head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, has taken the opportunity to assess the team’s performance thus far. Since assuming the role in the summer, Pochettino has been dedicated to shaping a competitive team from a squad that has experienced numerous new additions at Stamford Bridge in 2023.
While the team has displayed potential in matches against top-tier opponents such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Tottenham, inconsistency has hindered their performance since suffering a defeat at the hands of West Ham in the second gameweek. Pochettino has articulated that, “The performance from the beginning of the season is not bad. We could have said it’s very good, but in terms of competing we are at the bottom. That is why we are not in a better position in the table.”
Acknowledging the challenges faced, Pochettino has recognized the impact of injuries and suspensions on the team’s progress. He has conveyed, “We knew it would be a tough job, but the injuries and suspensions have made it worse. Too many important players out, too many circumstances from the beginning of the season not in our hands. That is the problem. That makes us disappointed and frustrated, but it’s a challenge.”
Looking forward, Pochettino has stressed the significance of building a cohesive squad and understanding the players and their ability to handle the expectations of playing for Chelsea, especially given the team’s mix of experienced and youthful players. He stated, “With this new project it’s about knowing people, knowing the players, knowing how everyone behaves, and having an idea for the future. It’s important to see how the players can cope with the pressure of playing for Chelsea. We have experienced players but a young squad that need to feel the Premier League.”
Despite the obstacles, Pochettino’s primary objective for Chelsea to secure a top-four finish remains a priority. However, he has conceded that the team is currently falling short of their targets. “Our target was to be at the top, even if nobody believed it. Now we are fighting for different things. Because of our history the demand is to be at the top, but at the moment, being realistic, we need to increase the way we compete if we want to win more games than we lose.”
As the season progresses, Pochettino is dedicated to enhancing the team’s competitive edge and working towards a stronger position in the league standings. Despite the challenges that have arisen, he remains committed to the growth and development of the squad in pursuit of their long-term goals.
